Medicare Plan D (PDP)

Both Medicare Part A and Part B offer very little prescription drug coverage. Medicare Part D offers prescription drug insurance if you are enrolled in either Medicare Part A or Part B.

How Can You Get Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage?

There are two ways to get Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage:
  1. With a Medicare Advantage plan offered by private companies and approved by Medicare
  2. Medicare Plan D offered by private companies and approved by Medicare.

Extra Help for Medicare Part D Coverage

People with limited income may be eligible for help paying for their Part D coverage. You can apply over the phone for this subsidy by contracting the Social Security Administration at 1-800-722-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and see if you qualify.

Coverage Gap

Most Medicare Prescription Drug Plans have a coverage gap (also called the "donut hole"). This means there's a temporary limit on what the drug plan will cover for drugs.
Not everyone will enter the coverage gap. The coverage gap begins after you and your drug plan have spent a certain amount for covered drugs. Amounts will vary every year. Also people with Medicare who get Extra Help, paying Part D costs may not enter the coverage gap.
